Winter League 2011/2012

Dec 10th: We won our third match of the winter season 3-1 against Downswood so we are still sitting happily at the top of the league. Both pairs (Gemma & Louise and Rach & Tates) mastered the icy courts to take the win. Gemma and Louise  beat their second pair 6-2,6-0 and their first pair 6-4,6-0; whilst Rach and Tates followed a tough loss to the first pair (1-6,1-6) with a great win against their seconds (6-0,6-2) to win the match. Just two more to go in the new year so we will keep you posted.

Nov 5th: The Ladies Seconds drew 2-2 with St Andrews Ladies 1. Tates & Louise put in a solid performance beating both pairs. Anna & Olivia, fought hard against both pairs narrowly missing out on taking the match against their second pair in a championship tiebreak. It was great fun on court and the seconds are still looking good at the top of the league with all to play for in the upcoming matches.

Oct 23rd: It was a glorious autumnal day; blue skies and sunshine with blustery wind making for some interesting shots!! Old College tennis club were a joy to play against, there was some excellent rallies and great net shots. Both teams fought against the wind but in the end Grafton (Gemma & Nicola and Rach & Tates) managed to clinch the match 4-0. We celebrated with sausage rolls and chocolate cake.

SUMMER MENS ROUNDUP

A strange loss to Limpsfield by the 2nds denied the 1sts/2nds/3rds a cleansweep in a domineering performance, all winning their divisions. 4ths and 5ths faired less well coming 4th and 5th respectively.

Bartek has injected extra spark into the 1sts, intensifying the battle for places in the squad and all 4 mens teams are confident for the Winter employing the new smaller-squad system to concentrate partnerships and performance.

MENS 1sts (captain Mike Adcock)

Winter Results

Cheam Fields:  4/0  Vincent/Simon and Mike/Max got us off to the perfect start despite two tiebreaks.

Cheam Sports:  3/1  Max/Patrick lost a tiebreak but Russell in his maiden appearance + Mike had no problems.

Magdalen: 3/1  Vincent/Simon lost  a mere 4 games but Mike/Max let a match slip.

MENS 2nds: (captain Matt Lavers)

Winter Results

Chipstead: 2/2  Matt/Rob Cundey and new boy Giani/Will both lost tight matches to their 1st but had no problems v 2nds

Spencer:  2/2:  very tight match with 3 tiebreaks; Matt/Rob Hodgkinson and Phil/Richard earned the point.

Limpsfield:  1/3  we dont like long trips out to Limpsfield! This was our sole loss in the summer and we went down again although this was virtually a 3rds squad: new kid on the block Ashwin was the only legitimate 2nd-teamer but Murray/Dan and Jon Downing making his maiden surrey appearance made them work for it- good tennis and plenty of deuces including one extraordinary 20-minute game in Murray/Dans second match at 3/1 which turned the game against us; Ash/Jon did well to win theit tiebreak from 1/5;  we need 4 points from our remaining two games…

MENS 3rds: (captain Murray Sutton)

October 30: Carshalton iv (A) : a tight opener but we ground out a 3/1 win involving two tiebreaks with the other two rubbers going to 6/7 4/6 and 7/5 6/4 so solid performances from Richard/Toby and Dan/Paul.

November 13: Old College v (A):  1/3  the date proved unlucky as our 11-match unbeaten run ground to a halt against useful but beatable opposition; our form fluctuated wildly: the Barker Boys unaccountably lost 1+2 to their 2nds but recovered well to edge their 1sts 7/5 5/7 1/0; Murray and Paul started well against their 1sts but never quite set their sights- they should have won the tiebreak against their 1sts despite Paul’s elbow going early on; then they just didnt turn up for the second rubber, collapsing 2/6 0/6; not our finest hour but we live to fight on

November 20: Cheam Sports iii (H): Ultra Vis balls were needed in the early fog but the ship was righted with a 4/0 win without the loss of a set and a 48/13 games score but it was not as straightforward as that- long rallies and myriad deuces; 11th-hour squad change resulted in Toby/Ben (Kelly) and Murray/David who combined well with David serving immaculately; lobs were deadly into the glorious sunshine that emerged and this was a perfect, friendly match; this puts us level with Old College at the top but they have a game in hand and our old enemies Wigmore look dangerous- we meet on

December 4: Wigmore vi (A):  2/2   Toby/Dan and David/Chris won us a point in a hard-fought match against our friendly local rivals with all four rubbers going to tiebreaks; this brings us level with Old College at the top but they have a game in han

January 29: Telford iv (H): 2/2  we needed two points from this final match but could only glean one but this was an excellent match:  Murray (battling a bloody thumb) and Steve (1st) and Dan/Paul Brindle both lost to their 1st pair in straights but edged their 2nd in tiebreaks; Dan and Paul played specially well winning a love set against their 2nds. This leaves us a disappointing third in the table to dwell on might-have-beens but plenty of positives to be taken from the campaign. Well played all who participated….

MENS 4ths:  (Captain Paul Denning)

Winter Results:

Woodfield: 3/1 Denning/Kennedy and Cooper/Pullan gave us the perfect start with this win over our friendly local rivals despite Peter/Paul losing to their 2nds.

Old College:  3/1  this put us top of the table; Denning/Kennedy remain unbeaten and Braimbridge/Jordan only narrowly lost to their 1st.

David Lloyd Cheam: 1/3  effectively the division decider and they were tough oppo;Denning/Kennedy’s run hit the buffers but Braimbridge/Jakubowski can take encouragement from beating their 1st 7/5 6/4.
